London-West, MPP Chris Bentley(top right) and MP Ed
holder, along with Coun. David Winninger, announced
the funding fo the affordable housing.
Low-income seniors in the city are the target for 52 new
affordable housing rental units announced by government
officials, Friday (Nov. 20).
The development, to be located at 390 Princess Ave., comes
on $4.7 million in multi-level funding involving all three
levels of government.>br>
Coun. David Winninger, on behalf of London Mayor Anne Marie
DeCicco-Best, said the "multi-level funding" is very
important Londoners, especially seniors.
The money is part of
Canada's Economic Action Plan (ECP), said Ed Holder,
London-West MP.
"The Government of Canada is helping Canadians during these
tough economic times and giving hope to seniors who need
quality, affordable housing that meets their needs," Holder
said, adding the ECP is "creating jobs and stimulating the
economy during the global recession." In Ontario, that
equates to a $1.2 billion joint investment.
Chris Bentley, London-West MPP and Ontario's Attorney
General, said the new housing initiatives add "significant
support" to the government's Poverty Reduction Strategy.
"We will continue to work with our municipal partners to
ensure more units are built during the life of this
program," Bentley said.
Canada's EAP provides $400 million, over two years, to build
new rental housing for low-income seniors. Overall, the plan
includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing,
plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for
housing-related infrastructure.
On a provincial level, the government Ontario is
implementing this additional funding with a total of 39
quick start projects totaling over $76.5 million.
