An agency that has long served immigrants in
northeast London has launched a service to improve
the quality of life for moms and daughters in that
neighbourhood.
Through a program called DAMES (Daughters and
Mothers Experiencing Success), LUSO Community
Service aims to bring women and their daughters out
for a weekly meal and empowering workshops.
“We know that women facing barriers tend to be
more isolated because often they are at home while
their kids are at school and their partners are at
work,” said LUSO executive director Elisabete
Rodrigues. “We want to get moms out of their homes.”
The program, free to participants, received a
$40,000 boost from Status of Women Canada which was
announced by London West MP Ed Holder
Wednesday.
The money will go toward staff costs,
development, outreach, transportation and the food —
which will be cooked and shared by the moms and
daughters at the beginning of their weekly session.
Each DAMES program — three are scheduled — will
run for 12 weeks and include workshops and speakers
on topics that include education, financial
literacy, rights in Canada and technology.
There still are openings for the first course,
which begins Wednesday, said Rodrigues. Anyone
interested can call LUSO at 519-452-1466.
