CONSTRUCTION CAN START ON THE HELP CLEAN WATER PROJECT
John Baird – Canada’s
Transport and Infrastructure Minister issued the following statement
addressing HELP Clean Water (Huron Elgin London Project):
Today, HELP Clean Water (Huron Elgin London
Project) under Building Canada now has a federal green light to
start construction. I am pleased that the federal review for this
project is complete. I look forward to quickly signing a
contribution agreement and federal funding will flow directly to the
City of London
as it proceeds with construction. The Government of Canada is
committing up to $50 million to this project.
This is the kind of important project this
government is proud to support. It will take action to bring clean
water to more than 500,000 people in
Southwestern Ontario.
The Government recognizes that building water
treatment plants, highways and other infrastructure helps to boost
our economy. These construction projects create jobs and help build
a long-term legacy for Canadians.
Changes are being made to cut red tape and speed
up our review processes. Our Government will also provide funding
faster under Building Canada to get projects going over the next two
years.
In addition, our ‘Canada’s Economic Action Plan’ will
provide close to $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding.
This will give the economy a much-needed shot in the arm.
During these challenging
economic times, the Government of Canada is working with all
partners to build the roads, water systems and other infrastructure Canada
needs for a strong, safe and economically competitive future.
