GOVERNMENTS INVEST IN LONDON’S
RECREATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
London, Ontario
—
London will benefit from joint federal and provincial
funding to improve community recreational infrastructure, announced
today under the Recreational Infrastructure
Canada program in Ontario (RInC Ontario) and Recreation Ontario (Ontario
REC).
These
projects will provide stimulus to the local economy through
investments that will spur construction activity related to
recreational infrastructure. Improving recreational facilities and
services will also encourage higher levels of participation in
physical activity and community building.
“Investing
in recreational infrastructure will provide health and economic
benefits to Londoners at this critical time and the positive impact
will last for many years.
Collaboration with our provincial partners to deliver funding
will create jobs and make a difference in the lives of residents
throughout London,” said London West Member of Parliament Ed Holder.
“Creating
jobs in our city is our highest priority. These projects will do
just that while at the same time promoting our strong community and
recreation centres,” said Deb Matthews, MPP for London North Centre.
“Thanks
to this important recreational infrastructure funding, we will
continue to invest in a variety of innovative community facilities
to keep our citizens healthy and happy. By working together with
other levels of government, we are also better
equipped
to answer the future social and recreational needs of all
Londoners,” said
London Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best.
“Wow!
Unbelievable what everyone can do together to improve the lives of
those less fortunate in our community. Local, Provincial and Federal
government leaders working as a team to create jobs, rejuvenate
recreation facilities, stimulate the local economy and most
important of all stabilize the lives of over 14,000 children, youth,
seniors and families most in need in London and Middlesex,” said Don
Donner, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of London.
These
projects are one of 758 projects announced on June 26 by Minister of
State (Science and Technology) Gary Goodyear, on behalf of the
Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, and Ontario Minister
of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Leona Dombrowsky, on behalf
of George Smitherman, Ontario Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, worth a total joint federal and
provincial investment of more than $380 million.
Approved
projects were selected on the basis of merit and construction
readiness.
