Holder Lands Intern for 2nd Year in a Row
For the second year
in a row, Ed Holder, MP for London West is hosting a Parliamentary
Intern in Ottawa.
The Parliamentary
Internship Programme was established in 1969. Each year the
non-partisan programme selects ten young Canadians from across the
country and provides them with the opportunity to spend a year
working on Parliament Hill. In order to get a more complete
picture of how Parliament works, interns spend half of their
internship working with a Government MP, and the other half with an
MP from an Opposition party.
In an interesting
twist, it is the interns who conduct interviews with interested MPs
and then decide with whom they want to work. Once again, Mr.
Holder was chosen as one of the ten Members of Parliament that will
receive an intern this spring. Since his election in 2008, Mr.
Holder has become known on Parliament Hill as an especially active
and engaged MP, making him a natural choice for interns looking for
a rewarding experience. This year Mr. Holder’s intern is
John-Michael McColl of Salt Spring Island, British
Columbia.
Since Parliament
began sitting Mr. McColl has been working closely with Mr. Holder in
his role as a member of the International Trade Committee and the
Committee on Government Operations and Estimates. “It has been
a fascinating year to be a Parliamentary Intern with all that has
gone on in Parliament,” said Mr. McColl, “and this has been an
incredible learning experience for me. Mr. Holder is always going
out of his way to make me feel welcome, provide opportunities, and
to meaningfully include me in his work.”
Mr. McColl is looking
forward to visiting London with Mr. Holder in the near future.
“I’ve heard so much about London since I started working with Mr.
Holder, and I can’t wait to actually see it.” Ed Holder sees
the internship programme as a win-win situation for both interns and
the MPs they work for. “Having John-Michael has been a huge benefit
for both of us; he brings forward great and thoughtful ideas with
never-ending enthusiasm. He’s been a real asset to me in serving my
constituents” he said.
All Canadian citizens
under age 35 with a university degree are eligible to apply to the
Parliamentary Internship Programme. More information is available at
