Government of Canada Investing In Alzheimer’s Research
UWO Researchers Awarded Over $1 Million

– The
Government of Canada made significant investments in Alzheimer’s
research and the University of Western Ontario will benefit with the
awarding of three grants totalling $1,068,887 as part of the
Government of Canada’s investment in Seniors health.
“London will benefit as a result of the $1 million being awarded to
Western for these three projects.
There are already half a million Canadians living with
Alzheimer’s and the healthcare needs of our Seniors will continue to
become a growing issue in Canada.
This research funding will help us address those needs and
find better ways to care for our aging population,” said London West
MP Ed Holder.

Dr. Robert Bartha will study the use of Magnetic Resonance
PARACEST Imaging of in-vivo Protease Activity.
The federal Government is providing $449,243.

Dr. Stephen Pasternak at the University of Western Ontario will
study the production of beta-amyloid protein in brain cells to
determine where it is produced and how its production is
affected in Alzheimer’s disease.
The federal Government is providing $602,144.

Joshua Tam will receive the Frederick Banting and Charles Best
Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s Award for his work on
following the trafficking and cleavage of the Amyloid Precursor
Protein (APP) using photoactivatable green florescent protein.
The award from the federal Government is $17,500.
“Western has some of Canada’s best researchers and these grants are
proof that London’s science community continues to garner national
attention for its work,” said Holder.
