ECONOMIC ACTION PLAN CONTINUES TO CREATE JOBS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
FOR CANADIANS
Government Celebrates Significant Progress on new Centre for Applied
Transportation Technologies
LONDON, February 24, 2011 –
Jobs and economic growth continue to be created by Canada’s Economic
Action Plan as London West MP Ed Holder observed first-hand at
Fanshawe College today.
Mr. Holder toured the
construction site and viewed the significant progress made on the
new Centre for Applied Transportation Technologies.
“Our
Government’s top priority is the economy, which is why we are
continuing to implement Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
This investment in the new Centre for Applied Transportation
Technologies has created jobs and economic growth in London.
It will improve the education
options available to London students and will help the entire region
continue to prosper for years to come.”
The new 148,000 square-foot
centre, built at a cost of $31 million, will create a
state-of-the-art facility with 16 classrooms, 13 labs and seven
shops equipped to simulate real world scenarios in trades and
technologies that support the transportation industry.
The centre will accommodate 1,500 full-time students and will
feature a range of environmental construction techniques including a
green roof system over shop areas and solar hot water heating.
The project has provided real
economic stimulus by creating local jobs for engineers, architects,
trades people and technicians. It is also helping to generate the
advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canada’s
research and educational facilities at the forefront of scientific
advancement.
This project was jointly
funded by the Government of Canada and Government of Ontario through
the Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP).

“The economy has grown for
five straight quarters, but the economic recovery is still fragile,”
said Holder. “That is
why we must stay on track and continue to focus on the economy.”
Canada’s Economic Action Plan
provides close to $16 billion to modernize a broad range of
infrastructure including roads, bridges, public transit, parks and
water treatment facilities, and to support home ownership, help
stimulate the housing sector and improve housing across Canada.
