Canada is like a bird, it likes to soar freely.
Like birds, people are free to travel, vote and
get a good education. We have the freedom of speech and we have the
right to choose our own religion. Friends and family are free to
walk the streets without fear. Canada is protected by law and laws
are enforced by police. Many Canadians join the Armed Forces to
serve and protect our country.
We have our heroes, like Sir Frederick Banting
, who discovered insulin which helps many people and
to this very day he is a true hero. Another great hero is Alexander
Graham Bell- inventor of the telephone. He successfully flew nine
meters above ground. This plane was made mostly of wood and paper
materials and was the first flight in Canada. John Connon is the man
who invented the first panorama camera in 1887. Cameras are still
used today - his camera could take pictures up to a distance of 76
cm! Now you can take pictures from kilometres away! You can also
take stunning sports photos.
Speaking of sports, did you know that the two
similar and well known sports, hockey and lacrosse, were invented by
Canadians? Canadians also invented not as popular sports: football,
ringette and five pin bowling. Hockey, my favorite sport and
hopefully yours, was created in Windsor, Nova Scotia in mid 1850s by
John Hockey. Another famous Canadian that most should recognize is
Tim Horton, better known for coffee and donuts. He was a famous
hockey player. He died on his way home from a hockey game driving on
the QEW on February 21, 1974.
Now where else can you learn more about this is
- Hockey Night in Canada's "Coachs Corner".
Theres even a special day to do with hockey and its,
"Hockey Day in Canada".
Speaking of special days, some of our favorite
holidays in Canada are Easter, Kwanza, Hanukkah, Valentines Day,
Family Day, Canada Day and most importantly Christmas the day we
all love because of the two weeks off. We spend time with family,
but we mostly like the presents. These reasons, they are all good
reasons, are why I, Jack Malott, am. Proud To Be
Canadian.

Why I am Proud to be Canadian!
As a young girl living in Canada, I have many
reasons to be proud. My daily life provides many examples of why
Canada is such a wonderful place to live! Hopefully after reading
what I have to say, you too will see why Canada is a very peaceful
place to live, with Natural Resources, beautiful landscapes,
freedoms and many other exciting features.
I am proud that Canada protects its natural
resources. Canada has fresh air to breathe and resources to warm or
cool my home in extreme temperatures. When I wake up in the morning,
I am proud and thankful that I live in a country where I have clean
water to brush my teeth and bath in. Canadians for the most part,
live in harmony with the wildlife around them and we work to
preserve natural habitats. We are careful to replant the trees that
we cut down and we make sure that our waters are not over fished. It
makes me proud that Canada can produce its own food and also helps
supply other countries with food as well.
Canada provides me with Four Seasons. I enjoy
various activities, such as skating in the winter and swimming in a
cool blue lake in the summer. The landscapes on Canada are among the
most beautiful in the world. We have tall mountains for skiing and
climbing, forests for camping and hiking, and clean clear water for
swimming, fishing and boating. There is something for everyone to
enjoy while in Canada. If you are like me, I enjoy every season for
a different reason.
I am proud that I am Canadian, because I can
walk outside of my house with no fear. I can ride
my bike or scooter and play in my yard without fear of being
injured. Canadians do not need to live with war in their lives. We
have Peace Keepers who go and help other countries who are at war.
My local police protect my community as well as the RCMP who work
across Canada promoting lawful conduct. Canada has firefighters to
keep us safe as well as excellent border control. Canada is very
safe!
Canada provides me with many freedoms not
offered by other countries. First of all, I am very proud that women
have equal rights. I can vote because Canada is a democratic
Country. As a girl, I have the right to marry someone I choose! I
can also choose what I want to be when I grow up. We have public
education to make sure all children have access to the same
opportunities in life. Canada is often referred to as Global
Village. We have many different cultures living together in peace.
In fact, Canada is bilingual and we have two official languages;
English and French. Canada has a very strong native culture as well.
Something that is very close to my heart is that animals in Canada
have rights as well! We have laws against cruelty to animals. Canada
is certainly amazing.
I also have some fun reasons as to why I am
proud to live in Canada. We have some of the best cheese in the
world, so it doesnt surprise me that Canadians are the largest
consumers of macaroni and cheese in the world! Canada is the home of
the RIM- the makers of the Blackberry! Where would our parents be
without these devices? No other country can say
that they have really cool coins called "Loonies and Toonies".
Canadian maple syrup kicks Aunt Jemima right out of the Country.
Canadians are proud to wear socks with sandals and we made plaid
flannel fashionable! The saying, "Eh" is known to be very important
in Canadian communication. It can mean: What did
you say? What do you think? Wow? Hello? Sure! Or
it can be just used to end a sentence, Eh!
I am so very proud to be Canadian! Our natural
resources supply us with luxuries that not all countries have. We
have beautiful views from each coast and every province in between.
I have the right to walk around in my socks and sandals, sporting my
plaid shirt! I am Canadian!
